MACRINA (THE YOUNGER), Saint. - Elder sister of St. Basil the Great, she was educated very strictly by her mother and later assisted her in the government of the numerous family and of the considerable patrimony.
When the fiancé chosen for her by her parents died, M. decided to live in virginity, and later, free from every family care, she retired to a monastery. There she lived in penance and in the exercise of the virtues, also performing several miracles. At her death she was attended by her brother St. Gregory of Nyssa, who saw to her burial beside that of her parents and wrote her splendid eulogy. In the Roman Martyrologium as in the Greek Synaxaria she is commemorated on 19 July.
