MASSIMO, bishop of SARAGOZZA. — Chronicler who lived between 592 and 619. He attended, together with the bishop of BIELA, the Synods of Barcelona (599) and Egara (614). According to St. Isidore of Seville, M. wrote “much in prose and in verse...”. And he adds: “indeed it is said that he continues to write many things which I have not seen.”
His masterpiece was the *History of the Goths*, now lost, written in the form of a chronicle and probably used by St. Isidore and others. There are some marginal notes to the *Chronicle of VITOR* of Tours, which seem to have been taken from M.’s chronicle. A *Chronicon* published by R. de la Higuera (PL 80, 617-32) under M.’s name turns out to be a forgery.
