MASSIMO, bishop of SARAGOSSA. – Chronicler, who lived between 592 and 619. He attended, together with the Biclarense, the Synods of Barcelona (599) and Egara (614). According to s. Isidore of Seville, M. wrote “much in prose and verse...”. And he adds: “indeed, it is said that he continues to write many things that I have not seen”.
His masterpiece was the History of the Goths, now lost, written in chronicle form and probably used by s. Isidore and others. There are some marginal notes to the Chronicle of Victor of Tours, which seem to have been taken from M.’s chronicle. A Chronicon published by R. de la Higuera (PL 80, 617–32) under M.’s name is instead a forgery.
