MASSIMO, VESCOVO DI SARAGOZZA

MAXIMUS, Bishop of Saragossa. - Chronicler, who lived between 592 and 619. Together with the Biclarensis he attended the Synods of Barcelona (599) and of Egara (614). According to St. Isidore of Seville, M. wrote "much in prose and in verse..." And he adds: "indeed it is said that he continues to write many things that I have not seen."

His masterpiece was the History of the Goths, now lost, written in the form of a chronicle and probably used by St. Isidore and by others. There are some marginal notes to the Chronicle of Victor of Tours, which seem to be taken from the chronicle of M. A Chronicon published by R. de la Higuera (PL 80, 617-32) under the name of M. turns out instead to be a forgery.
