Mastai Ferretti, Gabriele

MASTAI FERRETTI, GABRIELE. - Born at Senigallia on 31 May 1781, died there on 13 July 1869.

The firstborn of the four sons of Count Girolamo, the last of whom, Giovanni Maria, was Pope Pius IX, he was gonfaloniere of Senigallia from 1816 to 1831.

During the uprisings of that year, he adhered to the liberal cause, which earned him removal from office. He resumed his duties only in 1850, after having joined his brother at Gaeta, and retained them until his death.

He never availed himself of his kinship with the Pontiff for personal profit, but only in favor of the city entrusted to his administration. He obtained, among other things, the establishment of a ginnasio-convitto and other benefits of various kinds.
