Marini (De Marini), Pileo

MARINI (DE MARINI), PILEO. - Archbishop, b. in Genoa around 1370, d. there on 30 September 1433.

Son of a certain Ambrogio, little or nothing is known of his youth. He is found as a canon in Padua and then as an apostolic notary. Boniface IX conferred on him the archiepiscopal see of Genoa toward the end of 1400, but, having remained faithful to the legitimate Roman Pontiff, the antipope Benedict XIII removed him from his see, giving him as successor the Genoese canon Giovanni da Godigliasco. The Pisan pope Alexander V restored him in 1409 to his archdiocese, which he then governed peacefully until his death. It is known that he took part in 1414 in the Council of Constance and that in 1421 he presided over a diocesan synod. He instituted in his city a magistracy of mercy, which still exists, as a pious work under the presidency of the archbishops pro-tempore.
