MARINI (DE MARINI), PILEO. — Archbishop, born in Genoa around 1370, died there on 30 September 1433.
The son of a certain Ambrogio, little or nothing is known about his youth. He is found as a canon in Padua and subsequently as an apostolic notary. Boniface IX conferred upon him the archiepiscopal see of Genoa toward the end of 1400; but, since he had remained faithful to the legitimate Roman Pontiff, the antipope Benedict XIII removed him from his see, appointing as his successor the Genoese canon Giovanni da Godigliasco. The Pisan pope Alexander V restored him in 1409 to his archdiocese, which he then governed peacefully until his death. It is known that he took part in the Council of Constance in 1414 and that in 1421 he presided over a diocesan synod. In his city he established a magistracy of mercy, which still exists as a charitable institution under the presidency of the archbishops in office.
