Monarchianism

MONARCHIANISM. — Name formerly given to the heresy of modalism or Sabellianism, and also, by certain modern authors and less properly, to that of adoptionism, because, with the aim of safeguarding monotheism, the former denied the real distinction of the Divine Persons in the Trinity, while the latter denied the divinity of Christ, thus heretically understanding the ancient monotheistic saying that in faith in the divinity one must maintain the monarchy.
