NONNA, saint. — She is commemorated by the Greeks and Latins on 5 August. A woman of outstanding virtue, pious, charitable, and deeply devoted to religion, she converted her husband to Catholicism; he later became bishop of Nazianzus.
Her marriage was blessed with three children, all three venerated as saints, among whom St. Gregorio Nazianzeno stands out; on several occasions, in his writings, he left explicit and affectionate testimony to his mother’s virtues. She died nearly a hundred years old in 374, shortly after her husband.
