HOSPITAL SISTERS OF OUR LADY OF CHARITY. — Institute founded at Dijon in 1682 by the venerable B. Joly.
In August 1694 the Constitutions were approved by the bishop of Langres (the diocese of Dijon is more recent), and on 25 February the first professions took place. The development of the Institute was delayed by the French Revolution. The decree of praise dates from 3 March 1869. But immediately thereafter the communities of Châtillon-sur-Seine and Vitteaux became independent, and the community of Dijon itself split in 1904 because of lay interference in the election of the superior. The Institute reunited on 16 July 1928 and received its own constitutions. The sisters care for the sick in hospitals and clinics and engage in every other form of hospital work. In 1948 there were 65 of them, with 6 novices and 6 houses.
