OSPITALIERE DI NOSTRA SIGNORA DELLA CARITÀ

HOSPITALLERS OF OUR LADY OF CHARITY. – Institute founded in Dijon in 1682 by the Venerable B. Joly.

In August 1694 the Constitutions were approved by the Bishop of Langres (the Diocese of Dijon being more recent), and on 25 February the first professions took place. The development of the Institute was delayed by the French Revolution. The decree of praise was issued on 3 March 1869. Soon after, however, the communities of Châtillon-sur-Seine and Vitteaux became independent, and the Dijon community itself split in 1904 because of lay interference in the election of the superior. The Institute reunited on 16 July 1928 and obtained its own constitutions. The sisters engage in nursing in hospitals and clinics and in all other hospital activities. In 1948 there were 65 sisters, 6 novices, and 6 houses.
