PADÉLOUP (PASDELOUP). - A family of French bookbinders active between the 17th and 18th centuries, of whom at least 12 members working between the years 1635-1770 are remembered. Among them stands out ANTOINE-MICHEL "le jeune" (1685-1758), head of the workshop from 1712.

In his day he enjoyed very wide fame; he was "relieur du Roy" (Louis XV) and binder to numerous bibliophiles, among them Count Henry d'Hoym, ambassador of Saxony in Paris.

P. bindings descend in many respects from the "Grolier" (v.) ones, with a greater profusion of ornamental applications achieved by working with small tools in the style known as "à la dentelle", of which A.-M. P. is considered the initiator. He later moved on to the style known as "à mosaïque" or "à répétition", with regular repeating compartments formed by straight and curved fillets of various design and colouring, obtained by applying to the covers very thin strips of leather of various colours — a particularly minute inlay work rich in effect.
