PAPANTLA, DIOCESE of. — City and diocese of Mexico, suffragan of the archdiocese of Vera Cruz.

It has an area of 19,559 sq km and a population of 280,000 inhabitants, of whom 225,000 are Catholics, distributed among 22 parishes served by 32 diocesan priests; it has 9 women’s religious communities (Ann. Pont., 1952, p. 310).

The diocese was erected by Pope Pius XI by the apostolic constitution Orbis catholici of 24 November 1922, through separation from the archdiocese of Vera Cruz.
