It has an area of 19,559 sq. km. with a population of 280,000 inhabitants, of whom 225,000 are Catholics, distributed in 22 parishes served by 32 diocesan priests; with 9 women's religious communities (Ann. Pont., 1952, p. 310).
The diocese was erected by Pope Pius XI with the apostolic constitution *Orbis catholici* of 24 November 1922, by separation from the archdiocese of Vera Cruz.
