PARTENIUS I, patriarch of CONSTANTINOPLE. — He held this office from 1639 to 1644, when, forced to yield his place to his successor Partenius II (1645–51), he withdrew first to Cyprus, then to Chios, where he died, apparently, in 1646.
During his patriarchate he sought to eradicate from the Church of Constantinople the Calvinism introduced there under the patriarch Cyril Lucaris, whose doctrines were condemned anew. P. also ordered Meletius Syrigus to revise or translate into Greek the Confession of Peter Moghila, approved at the Synod of Iași in 1642.
