PANARETOS, MATTEO ANGELO. - Byzantine polemicist of the 14th century, of whose life it is known that he was probably born in Rhodes and lived in Constantinople, holding the office of quaestor at the imperial court.
The manuscripts have transmitted 10 treatises by P. against the Pilioque, 3 against the primacy of St. Peter and the Roman pontiffs, and another 5 dealing respectively with unleavened bread, Purgatory, the origin of the Schism, the water to be added to the chalice in the Mass, and “24 other absurdities of the Latins” (ed. P. Risso). In his polemic P. chiefly attacks the doctrine of the Angelic Doctor, then so much in vogue in Constantinople.
