MATTEO ANGELO PANARETOS. — Byzantine polemicist of the 14th century, of whose life it is known that he was probably born in Rhodes and lived in Constantinople, holding the office of quaestor in the imperial court.
Manuscripts have preserved Panaretos’ treatises against the *Filioque*, three against the primacy of St Peter and of the Roman pontiffs, and five others dealing respectively with unleavened bread, Purgatory, the origin of the Schism, the addition of water to the chalice in the Mass, and “24 other absurdities of the Latins” (ed. P. Risso). In his polemic Panaretos chiefly targets the doctrine of the Angelic Doctor, which was then much in vogue in Constantinople.
