Matthaios Panaretos
PANARETOS, MATTEO ANGELO. - Byzantine polemicist of the 14th century, of whose life it is known that he was probably born on Rhodes and that he lived in Constantinople, holding the office of quaestor at the imperial court.
The manuscripts have handed down 10 treatises by P. against the Filioque, 3 against the primacy of St. Peter and of the Roman pontiffs, and 5 others that deal respectively with unleavened bread, Purgatory, the origin of the Schism, the water to be added to the chalice in the Mass, and "24 other absurdities of the Latins" (ed. P. Risso). In his polemic P. takes aim principally at the doctrine of the Angelic Doctor, then so much in vogue in Constantinople.
