RIMBERT (Reimbert, Rembert), Saint. - Benedictine, follower and biographer of St. Ansgar (v.), b. in Flanders, d. 11 June 888. He studied in the monastery of Torhout (Turholt). At Ansgar's wish, R. received the ecclesiastical habit and the tonsure, and became his companion.

After Ansgar's death, R., a deacon, was elected by the clergy and the people as his successor in the see of Bremen and Hamburg (a. 865); he was consecrated by the archbishop of Mainz, Liutbert, and received the pallium the same year from Pope Nicholas I. At Corvey he entered the Order of St. Benedict. He visited Denmark and Sweden (866, 876), took part in the Synod of Worms (May 868) and in the Assembly of the Empire at Frankfurt am Main (Jan. 873). His tomb is in the eastern outer wall of the cathedral of Bremen. Feast on 11 June; translation of the relics on 4 February.
