SAILER, SEBASTIAN. - Pre-Premonstratensian preacher and writer, in the world Johann Valentin, b. at Weissenhorn on 12 Feb. 1714, d. at Obermarchtal on 7 March 1777. He took the habit (c. 1731) in the imperial abbey of Obermarchtal (Swabia), was ordained a priest in 1738, then taught canon law in the abbey, after which for many years he was parish priest successively at Reutlingendorf and Dieterskirch, and from 1773 again in the abbey.
S. was a preacher of exceptional popularity (the Cicero of Swabia). For his dramatic works, mostly of a humorous character, he used the Swabian dialect, thus becoming the forerunner of this literary genre in Swabia. He published among other things an imitation of Mary (Kempensis Marianus, sive Libellus unicus de imitatione Mariae Virginis et Matris Dei..., Günzburg 1764), reprinted several times and translated into various languages. For his vast culture, originality, readiness in retort and good humor S. greatly recalls Abraham of St. Clara (v.), his celebrated compatriot.
