SAILER, SEBASTIAN. - Premonstratensian preacher and writer, Johann Valentin in the world, b. at Weissenhorn on 12 Feb. 1714, d. at Obermarchtal on 7 March 1777. He took the habit (c. 1731) in the imperial abbey of Obermarchtal (Swabia), was ordained priest in 1738, then taught canon law in the abbey, and was subsequently parish priest for many years at Reutlingendorf and Dieterskirch; from 1773 he was again in the abbey.

For his dramatic works, mostly humorous in character, he used the Swabian dialect, thus becoming the forerunner of this literary genre in Swabia. Among other works, he published an imitation of Mary (Kempensis Marianus, sive Libellus unicus de imitatione Mariae Virginis et Matris Dei..., Günzburg 1764), reissued several times and translated into various languages. On account of his broad culture, originality, ready repartee, and good humour, S. greatly recalls Abramo da S. Chiara (v.), his celebrated compatriot.
