Saltillo, Diocese of

SALTILLO, DIOCESE of. — City and diocese in Mexico, in the State of Coahuila.

It has an area of 155,000 sq km and a population of 710,000 inhabitants, of whom 683,500 are Catholics. The diocese has 30 parishes and a clergy of 38 diocesan and 31 religious priests. It has 1 seminary, 8 male and 25 female religious communities (Ann. Pont. 1952, p. 348). The city was founded in the 16th century and established as a diocese by Pope Leo XIII in 1891, as a suffragan of Monterrey.
