SCALABRINI, GIUSEPPE ANTENORE. - Priest, b. at Ferrara on 13 March 1698, d. there on 5 Apr. 1777.

Ordained priest in 1724, he was appointed parish priest of S. Maria delle Bocche, where he remained until his death; he was a canon and reader of Holy Scripture at the University of his native city, where he took his degree in theology. His scholarly activity began in 1726 with his correspondence with Muratori. For more than half a century he transcribed ancient Ferrarese documents, largely transmitted to Muratori for the Rerum Italicarum Scriptores. In addition, he compiled for himself several Memorie sacre e profane della S. Chiesa di Ferrara, and in particular concerning the metropolitan church; he also wrote various explanatory notes collected in the Memorie istoriche delle chiese di Ferrara. Altogether he wrote more than 50 works, comprising 15,000 folios. Muratori addressed 170 letters to him, whereas only 71 letters from S. to Muratori are known. The Bollandists, in the Acta Sanctorum, refer to him as carissimus noster.
