TEAGENE, saint, martyr. - He is commemorated in the Martyrologium Hieronymianum on 3 January together with two companions, Zirico and Primo, but this is due to an erroneous interpretation of the topographical indications of the Passio; in the Synaxary he is falsely called a bishop.
The Passio, dating from the fourth century, relates that T. was the son of the bishop of Pario in the Hellespont. Called to military service in the time of the emperor Licinio, he refused to enlist on religious grounds. He was therefore tried by the tribune Zelicinio, who, after having him horribly scourged, shut him up in prison in fetters. Condemned to death, he was thrown into the sea; some faithful persons recovered his body and buried it on the estate of a certain Adamanzio.
