THEAGENES, Saint, Martyr. — He is commemorated in the *Martyrologium Hieronymianum* on January 3 together with two companions, Ziricus and Primus, but this is a mistaken interpretation of the topographical indications in the *Passio*; in the *Synaxarium* he is falsely called a bishop.
The *Passio*, dating from the 4th century, relates that T. was the son of the bishop of Parium in the Hellespont. Called to military service at the time of Emperor Licinius, he refused to enlist on religious grounds. He was therefore judged by the tribune Zelicinius, who after having him horribly scourged confined him in prison in chains. Condemned to death, he was cast into the sea; some faithful gathered his body and buried it in the villa of a certain Adamantius.
