UNITAS. — An international association of Catholics founded in Rome through the initiative of a group of professors and writers, priests and laypeople, which aims to work toward the spiritual reconciliation of peoples and especially of Christians.
It particularly promotes mutual knowledge and reciprocal understanding between Catholics and those in the East and West, though not Catholic, who believe in Christ. Its formal existence dates from 16 June 1945, the day on which it received the approval of the Holy Father. It is directed by a central committee in Rome, to which groups formed in other cities are connected, with the approval of the local Ordinaries. The Association has published a quarterly journal of the same name since 1946, in three editions: Italian, French, and English. UNITAS has established in Rome a "foyer" to assist non-Catholics who come to visit the Eternal City.
