UNITAS. - An international association of Catholics, established in Rome through the initiative of a group of professors and writers, priests and laypersons, which aims to work for the spiritual rapprochement of peoples and especially of Christians.
It particularly promotes mutual acquaintance and reciprocal understanding between Catholics and those who, in East and West, though non-Catholic, believe in Christ. It dates its formal existence from 18 June 1945, the day on which the approval of the Holy Father was communicated to II. It is directed by a central committee in Rome, to which the groups formed in other cities are affiliated, with the approval of the Ordinaries. Since 1946 the Association has published a quarterly journal
of the same name, in three editions: Italian, French, English. The U. has established in Rome a « foyer » to assist non-Catholics who come to visit the Urbs.
