UNITAS. - An international association of Catholics, founded in Rome on the initiative of a group of professors and writers, priests and laymen, which aims to work for the spiritual rapprochement of peoples and especially of Christians.
It particularly promotes mutual knowledge and reciprocal understanding between Catholics and all those in East and West who, though not Catholics, believe in Christ. Its formal existence dates from June 18, 1945, the day on which the Holy Father's approval was communicated to it. It is directed by a central committee in Rome, to which the groups formed in other cities are linked, with the approval of the Ordinaries. Since 1946 the Association has published a quarterly journal of the same name, in three editions: Italian, French, English. U. has created a "foyer" in Rome to help non-Catholics who come to visit the City.
