ZINZINÓ. - He is improperly numbered among the antipopes.

On the death of Paschal I (11 Feb. 824) there was a double papal election (a circumstance passed over in silence by the Lib. Pont.), as emerges from the so-called Einhardi annales (ad a. 824: ed. G. H. Pertz, in MGH, Scriptores, I [1826], p. 212), from the Vita Walae (28: ed. Pertz, ibid., II [1829], p. 545) and from Thegan's Vita Hludowici imp. (30: ibid., p. 595). One candidate was backed by the exercitus (the nobility), the other by the Familia S. Petri (the ecclesiastical bureaucracy); the effective intervention of the monk Wala brought victory to the former, who became Eugenius II. The other did not persist, and the sources do not even know his name, which is recorded, on what basis is not known, by O. Panvinio (Romani Pontifices et Cardinales S. R. E. ab eisdem a Leone IX ad Paulum III... creati, Venice 1557, p. 45; Chronicon ecclesiasticum, Louvain 1573, p. 72).
