ZIPAQUIRÁ, DIOCESE of. – City and diocese of the Department of Cundinamarca in Colombia (South America).
It has an area of 12,500 sq km and a population of 400,000 inhabitants, all Catholics, distributed among 39 parishes served by 27 diocesan and 30 regular priests; it has a minor seminary, 3 male and 13 female religious communities (Ann. Pont. 1953, p. 462).
The diocese was created by Pope Pius XII by the apostolic constitution Ne nimia of 1 September 1951, through the dismemberment of the archdiocese of Bogotá from the foran vicariates of Z., Chocontá, Gradua, Lenguazaque, La Palma, La Peña, Machstá, Pacho, Susa, Topiapi, Ubate, and Vergara; the see of the diocese was established in Z., and the church of the Most Holy Trinity was elevated to cathedral rank with a cathedral Chapter.
