It has an area of 12,500 sq km with a population of 400,000 inhabitants, all Catholics, distributed in 39 parishes, served by 27 diocesan priests and 30 regulars; it has a small seminary, 3 male religious communities and 13 female ones (Ann. Pont. 1953, p. 462).
The diocese was created by Pope Pius XII with the apostolic constitution Ne nimia of 1 September 1951, by dismemberment of the archdiocese of Bogotá from the vicariates forane of Z., Chocontá, Gradua, Lenguazaque, La Palma, La Peña, Machstá, Pacho, Susa, Topiapi, Ubate, Vergara; the seat of the diocese was established in Z. and the church of the Most Holy Trinity was elevated to the dignity of cathedral with a cathedral Chapter.
