ALEXANDER, ARCHIBALD. - Teologo presbiteriano degli Stati Uniti, n. ad Augusta (ora Rockbridge) il 17 apr. 1772, m. a Princeton (New Jersey) il 22 ott. 1851. Scosso l’indifferentismo nel revival del 1789, si diede agli studi sacri e divenne preside del collegio di Hampden-Sidney. Organizzò (1812) a Princeton il “Theological Seminary”, in cui insegnò lunghi anni.
Oltre l’importante opera apologetica Outlines of the Evidence of the Christianity (Princeton 1823), tradotta in molte lingue e spesso ristampata, e il postumo Moral Science (1852), pubblicò (a Filadelfia): Canon of the Old and New Testament (1826), History of the Patriarchs (1833), History of the Israelitish Nation (postumo, 1853). Il suo Bible Dictionary (ed. American Sunday School Union, 1831) ebbe larghissima diffusione.
