LINGARD, JOHN. - Polemista e storico inglese, n. a Winchester il 5 febbr. 1771, m. a Horbny il 17 luglio 1851. Ordinato sacerdote a York, insegnò nel Collegio di Crookhall, dedicando la sua attività di studioso ad opere di polemica in difesa del cattolicesimo e soprattutto alla raccolta del materiale per la storia religiosa e politica del suo paese.
Della sua vastissima produzione si ricordano soltanto le due opere di maggiore importanza storica: The antiquities of the anglo-saxon Church (Newcastle 1866) e A history of England from the first invasion by the Romans to the commencement of the reign of William III (Londra 1819-30) e la traduzione del Vangelo: New version of the four Gospels (ivi 1836), in sostituzione di quello di Douai.
