luni approva; — 3.

4 § 2. Ritenendo però equo che coloro che hanno assunto i pii lavori di questa pia difesa della fede di Cristo, siano onorati con ogni lode e onore, vogliamo non solo esaltare e magnificare con degni encomi ciò che la tua maestà ha scritto contro lo stesso Lutero con dottrina assolutissima e non minore eloquenza, e approvare e confermare con la nostra autorità;

7 Nulli ergo etc. Strictio.

approves it; — 3. Bestows upon him the title of Defender of the Faith; — 4. Blesses him, his spouse and his children. — Penal sanction.

1 Leo, bishop, servant of the servants of God, to our most beloved son in Christ Henry, illustrious King of England, Defender of the Faith, greeting and apostolic blessing.

2 By the disposition of divine providence, although unworthy of such a charge, presiding over the governance of the universal Church, we extend the thoughts of our heart far and wide to this end, that the Catholic faith, without which no one makes progress unto salvation, may receive continual increase; and that those things which, for the purpose of restraining the attempts of those who strive to depress it or to pervert and blacken it with false and wicked inventions, have been established by the sound doctrine of Christian faithful, especially those shining with royal dignity, may advance with continual growth; we devote the efforts and work of our ministry to this end. And just as other Roman Pontiffs, our predecessors, were accustomed to honor Catholic princes with special favors, as the quality of times and circumstances required, especially those who, in stormy times and amid the raging fierce perfidy of schismatics and heretics, not only remained immovable in the serenity and devotion of the most holy Roman Church undefiled, but also, as legitimate sons of that Church itself and most valiant athletes, spiritually and temporally opposed themselves to the insane furies of schismatics and heretics; so also we desire to extol your majesty, on account of your lofty and immortal deeds and actions toward us and this holy See, in which, by divine permission, we sit, with worthy and immortal praises and commendations, and to grant to you those things on account of which you ought to be vigilant to drive wolves from the flock of the Lord, and to cut off with the sword and material blade the putrid members which infect the mystical body of Christ, and to confirm the wavering hearts of the faithful in the solidity of faith.

3 § 1. Indeed, when recently our beloved son Henry, through John Clerk, your majesty's orator, wrote to us a book against Martin Luther, and the orator, in our consistory, before the venerable brothers of the holy Roman Church, the cardinals, and many other prelates of the Roman Curia, requested that the book which your majesty, inflamed by charity, which acts carefully and does nothing wrongly, and by zeal for the Catholic faith and by fervor of devotion toward us and this holy See, composed against the errors of various heretics, often condemned by this holy See and recently stirred up and renewed by Martin Luther, as a noble and salutary antidote, be examined by us and then approved by our authority; and when your majesty had set forth in a lucid oration that you were prepared and disposed so that, just as you had refuted the notorious errors of that Martin by true reasoning and irrefragable authorities of Sacred Scripture and the holy Fathers, you would also pursue and persecute all those presuming to follow and defend them with all the forces and arms of your entire kingdom; and we had carefully and diligently examined the admirable doctrine of his book, sprinkled as it were with the dew of heavenly grace, we render immense thanks to almighty God, from whom every good gift and every perfect gift comes, who deigned to inspire your most excellent mind, inclined to all good, and to infuse into you such great grace from on high, that you wrote those things by which you defended your holy faith against this new stirrer up of such condemned errors, and invited the other Christian kings and princes by your example, so that they too would wish to be present with all their strength to the orthodox faith and evangelical truth, brought into danger and peril, and to favor it opportunely.

4 § 2. We judge it fitting, therefore, that those who have undertaken such pious labors in defense of the faith of Christ be honored with all praise and honor; wishing not only to extol and magnify with worthy praises those things which your majesty wrote against that same Luther with most absolute doctrine and no less eloquence, and to approve and confirm them by our authority;

5 § 3. But also to adorn thy majesty itself with honour and title, so that all Christ's faithful in our time and in perpetual future ages may understand how grateful and acceptable to us has been the gift of thy majesty, offered to us at this time in particular; we, who are the true successors of Peter, whom Christ, about to ascend into heaven, left as his vicar on earth, and to whom he committed the care of his flock, and who sit in this holy See, from which all dignities and titles emanate, having taken mature deliberation upon these matters with our same brothers, by their unanimous counsel and assent, have decreed to bestow upon thy majesty this title, namely Defender of the Faith, as we do hereby invest thee with such title by these presents, commanding all Christ's faithful that they name thy majesty by this title, and when they write to thee, after the word king, they add Defender of the Faith. And in truth, having carefully weighed and considered the excellence and dignity of this title, and thy singular merits, we could have devised no name either more worthy or more fitting to thy majesty. As often as thou shalt hear or read it, so often shalt thou be reminded of thy own virtue and excellent merit; nor shalt thou be puffed up by such a title or lifted up into pride, but by thy accustomed prudence thou shalt become more humble, and stronger and more steadfast in the faith of Christ and in devotion to this holy See, by which thou art exalted, and thou shalt rejoice in the Lord, the giver of all honours, leaving this perpetual and immortal monument of thy glory to thy posterity, and showing them the way, so that if they too should wish to be invested with such a title, they may also strive to accomplish such deeds and to follow the illustrious footsteps of thy majesty.

6 § 4. Which, as is well merited by us and the said See, together with thy wife and blessed children, and thy sons and daughters and all who shall be born from thee and from them, blessing them with our blessing in the name of Him from whom the power of blessing has been given to us, with a generous and liberal hand, we beseech and implore that Most High One, who said By me kings reign and princes rule, and in whose hand are the hearts of kings, that he may confirm thee in thy holy purpose, multiply thy devotion, and so illustrate thee with illustrious deeds done for the holy faith, and render thee conspicuous to the whole world, that the judgment which we have made concerning thee, adorning thee with so distinguished a title, may be judged by no one to be false or vain; and finally, when the course of this mortal life is ended, may he make thee a sharer and partaker of that eternal glory.

7 Let no one therefore, etc. Strictly forbidden.

8 Given at Rome at St. Peter's, in the year of the Lord's Incarnation one thousand five hundred twenty-one, on the fifth day of October, in the ninth year of our pontificate. Given on 11 October 1521, pontificate year IX.
