Acquoy, Johannes Gerhardus Rijk

ACQUOY, JOHANNES GERHARDUS RIJK. - Dutch church historian, b. in Amsterdam on 3 Jan. 1829, d. in Leiden on 15 Dec. 1896. A doctor of theology at the University of Leiden in 1857 with a dissertation that revealed him as a valiant student of history, A. is known above all for his monumental history of the monastery of Windesheim. In 1881 he was called to occupy the chair of the history of Christianity at the University of Leiden, succeeding Rauwenhoff.

Among his works we recall: Gerardi Magni epistolae XIV, e codice regio Hagano nunc primum editae et perpetua amotatione qua melius et ipse et tempora ejus cognoscantur, instructae, Amsterdam 1857; Het Klooster te Windesheim, 3 vols., Utrecht 1875-86; Handleiding tot de Kerkgeschiedvorschung en Kerkgeschiedschrijving, 's Gravenhage 1894 (2nd ed., ibid. 1910).
