ACQUOY, JOHANNES GERHARDUS RIJK

ACQUOY, JOHANNES GERHARDUS RIJK. - Dutch ecclesiastical historian, born in Amsterdam on 3 January 1829, died in Leiden on 15 December 1896. Having earned a doctorate in theology at the University of Leiden in 1857 with a dissertation that revealed him to be a capable scholar of history, Acquoy is best known for his monumental history of the monastery of Windesheim. In 1881 he was appointed to the chair of the history of Christianity at the University of Leiden, succeeding Rauwenhoff. Among his works are: Gerardi Magni epistolae XIV, e codice regio Hagano nunc primum editae et perpetua annotatione qua melius et ipse et tempora ejus cognoscantur, instructae, Amsterdam 1857; Het Klooster te Windesheim, 3 vols., Utrecht 1875-86; Handleding tot de Kerkgeschiedvorsching en Kerkgeschiedschrijving, 's Gravenhage 1894 (2nd ed., ibid. 1910).
