ADELASIO, GHOLAMO. - Politician and priest, b. at Bergamo on 16 March 1763, d. there on 7 April 1828. After completing his studies in Rome at the Collegio del Nazareno, A. was elected in 1797 to be part of the provisional municipality of the Bergamasque Republic, after the fall of the Venetian lordship. As representative of the Cisalpine Republic to the Helvetic Confederation, minister of Finance and later member of the Cisalpine Directory, A. did not oppose the coup d'état carried out by Trouvé. On the arrival of the Austro-Russians he engaged in denunciation of his former revolutionary companions, so that after the battle of Marengo he had to take refuge in Venice. On the death of his wife he sought and found in the priestly ministry alone comfort and peace for his past life, and he was ordained a priest in 1802. He named the episcopal seminary of Bergamo universal heir of his considerable estate.
