ABIGNENTE, FILIPPO. - Politician, b. at Sarno (Salerno) on 9 Apr. 1814, d. at Rome on 13 June 1887. He was elected in 1848 as a deputy to the Neapolitan Chamber. Later an exile at Nice, he returned to Naples in 1860 and was appointed professor of Church history in that city. A deputy in the Italian parliament from 1867 to 1886, he maintained, in the sitting of 27 Jan. 1871, during the general discussion of the bill on the guarantees to the Pontifical See, the impossibility of arriving at a conciliation with the Papacy according to the formula "a free Church in a free State" after the proclamation of the dogma of pontifical Infallibility, in consequence of which only "a Catholic solution" was henceforth possible, which was equivalent, according to the A., to "the absence of all freedom."
