ADOLFO II, ARCIVESCOVO DI MAGONZA

ADOLPH II, Archbishop of Mainz. - Count of Nassau-Wiesbaden, great-nephew of the preceding, d. 6 Sept. 1475 at Eltville. Appointed by Pope Pius II archbishop of Mainz on 2 Aug. 1461, following the deposition of the excommunicated Diether of Isenburg, he obtained the archbishopric after the harsh war of 1461-63. A. strove to repair the damage produced by the war and to renew discipline among the convents and the secular clergy. He attended to the religious instruction of the people by having catechism tablets placed in the churches, obliging the priests to repeat every Sunday from the pulpit the Ten Commandments of God, the principal vices, etc. He favored art and science, and welcomed Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of the art of printing, at his court.
