ALBERICO of MONTECASSINO. - Monk of Montecassino, later cardinal of the title of SS. Quattro Coronati, who lived in the 11th century. Precise information concerning his origin, career, and date of death is lacking; the latter is generally placed on 17 October 1088. The chroniclers of Montecassino, Pietro Diacono and his continuator, praise the learning and virtues of A. and recall his participation in the Roman Synod of February 1079, held by Pope Gregorio VII against Berengario (v.) of Tours. By word and in writing, drawing on the doctrine of the holy Fathers, A. proved the real presence of Christ in the sacrament of the Eucharist, which Berengario had expressly denied in his profession of faith.
