ALBERIC OF MONTE CASSINO. - Monk of Montecassino, later cardinal of the title of Sts. Quattuor Coronati, who lived in the 11th century. There is no precise information about his origin, his career, or the date of his death, generally placed on 17 Oct. 1088. The chroniclers of Montecassino, Peter the Deacon and his continuator, praise the wisdom and virtues of A. and recall his participation in the Roman Synod of Feb. 1079 convened by Pope Gregory VII against Berengar (v.) of Tours. Orally and in writing, with the doctrine of the holy Fathers, A. proved the real presence of Christ in the sacrament of the Eucharist, which Berengar in his profession of faith had expressly denied.
Peter the Deacon (Chronicon Casinense: PL 173, 888 ff.; De ortu et obitu iustorum Casinensium: ibid., 1105; Liber de viris illustribus Casinensibus: ibid., 1046) gives the catalogue of the works of A.: De virginitate s. Mariae; Liber dictaminum et salutationum; De astronomia; De musica dialogus; De electione v. Pontificis contra Heinricum imperatorem; Vita s. Dominici Sorani; Vita s. Scholasticae; De dialectica; Liber de corpore Domini (written in 1079 against Berengar); letters to St. Peter Damian (PL 145, coll. 621-34).
