Alberic of the Three Fountains (Trois-Fontaines, Diocese of Châlons-sur-Marne)

ALBERICO delle TRE FONTANE (Trois-Fontaines, diocese of Châlons-sur-Marne). – Cistercian, died after 1241, author of a universal chronicle (Chronicon) from the creation of the world to the year 1241.

He drew on a great number of sources, many of which have been preserved, while some were lost. The work, interpolated before 1295 by Maurice, a canon regular of Neufmoustier near Huy, often lacks critical discernment and therefore has only relative value, except for the last 20 years. The chronicle was edited with a critical introduction by P. Scheffer-Boichorst, in MGH, Scriptores, XXIII, Hannover 1874, pp. 631–950.
