BABENSTUBER, LUDWIG. - Benedictine, b. at Deining (Upper Bavaria) in 1660, d. at Ettal in 1726. After making his profession in the monastery of Ettal (1682) and completing his philosophical and theological studies at the University of Salzburg, he was ordained a priest (1689) and taught philosophy at Salzburg and in the monastery of the Canons Regular of Schlehdorf. Having obtained his doctorate in theology at Salzburg in 1695, he taught at the same university moral theology (1695-1702), scholastic theology (1703-10) and biblical sciences and exegesis (1706-1716). Having withdrawn from the university in 1716, he went to his monastery of Ettal, where he continued teaching theology until his death.
B.'s principal work is the Philosophia Thomistica Salisburgensis (Augsburg 1706, in 4 volumes), in which, following the arrangement, then in use, of the works of Aristotle, he expounds, without great originality, integral Thomism. In his Ethica supernaturalis Salisburgensis (Augsburg 1712) he proposes probabilism in the sense of Laymann, Busenbaum, etc.
