ALBERICO of REIMS. - Medieval scholastic, d. in 1141. He was a pupil of Anselm of Laon, fellow student and opponent of Abelard (Hist. calamitatum, coll. 4 c. 9: PL 178, 125 and 144); archdeacon and professor at the cathedral school of Reims, where he attracted a large number of students despite the obscurity of his teaching. Elected bishop of Châlons-sur-Marne in 1126, Pope Honorius II refused, for reasons unknown, to confirm him, despite the intervention of St. Bernard in his favour (Epist. 13: PL 182, 116). In 1136 he was elected archbishop of Bourges, encouraged and supported by Pope Innocent II (PL 179, 278).
Of his works only one letter to Walter of Mortagne has survived, on the essence of the marriage contract (E. Martène, U. Durand, Veterum Scriptorum... ampliss. col. lectio, II, Paris 1720, coll. 838).
