ALBERICO da ROSCIATE. - Jurist, born in Bergamo and died there in 1354. He studied at Padua under Riccardo Malombra. He practised as an advocate in his native city and, owing to the great renown he soon attained, received important appointments, among which may be noted the embassy to Avignon in 1340, on behalf of the Visconti of Milan, and the revision of the city statutes.
His scholarly works were influenced by legal practice and by the questions to which the author was occasionally required to apply his intellect. He wrote extensive commentaries on the Digest and the Code, a Dictionary of civil and canon law, and a commentary on Book VI of the Decretals; but his principal work remains the Opus statutorum, in which he treats, systematically, of the basis, form, and efficacy of statutory laws.
