Also known as:
Italian: Alberico de Rosate;
Latin: Albericus de Rosciate
ALBERICO da ROSCIATE. - Jurist, b. in Bergamo and d. there in 1354. He studied at Padua in the school of Riccardo Malombra. He practiced the profession of lawyer in his city and, because of the great fame he soon attained, he received important assignments, among which are remembered the embassy to Avignon, in 1340, on behalf of the Visconti of Milan, and the revision of the city statutes.
His scholarly works felt the influence that came to them from the practice of the forum, and from the questions to which the author occasionally had to apply his intellect. He wrote extensive commentaries on the Digest and the Code, a Dictionary of civil and canon law, a commentary on the sixth book of the Decretals; but his principal work remains the Opus statutorum, in which he treats, in an organic manner, of the foundation, the form and the efficacy of statutory laws.
