al-KINDI, ABŪ JŪSŪP JĀ'QŪR IBN TAŊĀQ. - Arab philosopher, theologian and encyclopedic man, known to medieval Latin scholasticism under the name of Alkindi or Alchindus, b. at Basra and d. around 873.

He wrote on very varied subjects, and in particular on all the parts of logic; he composed a compendium of Aristotle's Poetics, an introduction to Aristotelian philosophy divided into three parts. He generally follows Aristotelian doctrine although at times adhering to Neoplatonism. Some of his short treatises were translated into Latin, such as the one On the unity of God and the finiteness of the world and another On first philosophy (ed. Nagy). His numerous other writings are still unpublished. In theology he opposed the doctrine of the existence in God of eternal attributes distinct from his essence. On the basis of Aristotelian logic he further opposed the Christian doctrine of the Trinity, seeing in it the worship of three gods. As for the doctrine of the intellect, al-K. distinguishes between four intellects.
