ALEXANDER YAROSLAVICH NEVSKY. - Born in 1220 (?), died in 1263. Still a young prince, he was lieutenant in Novgorod and as such in 1240 defeated the Swedes on the Neva River, a victory that determined for centuries the limit of Nordic influence. In 1242 he defeated the Teutonic Knights on Lake Peipus, thereby freeing northern Russia from Western domination, and consciously submitted to the Tatar power. For a century the Byzantine Church thus remained the only link between Europe and Russia. Peter the Great at the beginning of the 18th century had A.'s remains transported to a monastery in St. Petersburg, where he was honored as a saint and national hero.
