BENJAMIN. — A Dominican, probably Croatian, who, toward the end of the 15th century, translated at Nijni-Novgorod for the local archbishop Gennadio (1485–1504) what still remained of the Palaeoslavic version of the Bible, making partial use of the Vulgate. Only then was there, for the first time, a complete version in the Slavonic language of all of Holy Scripture. This version, never printed, formed the basis of the so-called Ostrog Bible (1581), and consequently of all the other Russian translations of the Bible down to the present day.
