BENJAMIN. — A Dominican, probably Croatian, who around the end of the 15th century translated at Nizhny Novgorod, for the local archbishop Gennadius (1485–1504), what remained of the Old Slavonic version of the Bible, making use in part of the Vulgate. It was only then that a complete version of the entire Holy Scriptures in the Slavic language was first produced. This version, never printed, served as the basis for the so-called Ostrog Bible (1581) and thus for all subsequent Russian translations of the Bible up to the present day.
