BENJAMIN. - Dominican, probably Croatian, who, toward the end of the 15th century, translated at Nizhny Novgorod for the local archbishop Gennadius (1485-1504) what still remained of the Old Church Slavonic version of the Bible, availing himself in part of the Vulgate. Only then was there for the first time a complete version in the Slavic language of the whole of Sacred Scripture. This version, never printed, was the basis of the so-called Ostrog Bible (1581) and therefore of all the other Russian translations of the Bible up to the present day.
