ALFONSO IX, RE DI LEÓN

ALFONSO IX, King of León. - Son of Ferdinand II, b. in 1171, d. in 1230. He sought, through marriages, union with other kingdoms of the peninsula. He first married the holy princess Teresa of Portugal, but when the dispensation for consanguinity was denied him by Pope Celestine III, he had to separate from her under penalty of excommunication and interdict, notwithstanding the children born from the union, among whom was the ven. Sancha Alfonsa. He then sought union with another cousin, Berenguela of Castile, by whom he had several children, among them St. Ferdinand; but Pope Innocent III was immovable and hurled the ecclesiastical censures for the separation of the spouses. Nevertheless the legitimization of St. Ferdinand produced the perpetual union of León and Castile.
