ALFONSO della MADRE ADDOLORATA – Discalced Carmelite, in the world León Pavy; born on 7 February 1842 in Audenaarde (Eastern Flanders), died at Bruges on 18 May 1927. He entered the order in 1861 and, in 1869, went to the mission of Mangalore, where at Calicut he erected a church, a hospital, nurseries, and orphanages. Recalled (1880) to his province, he was entrusted (1893) with the office of promoter of the Malabar missions, and established the “Pium Opus” in Belgium, through which he provided the bishops and missionaries of India with large sums intended for the construction of institutions, schools, and churches. He published several works on missionary history and asceticism.
