ALFONSO DELLA MADRE ADDOLORATA

ALFONSO DELLA MADRE ADDOLORATA - Discalced Carmelite, in the world León Pavy; b. 7 Feb. 1842 in Oudenaarde (French Flanders), d. at Bruges on 18 May 1927. He entered the order in 1861, and went, in 1869, to the mission of Mangalore, where at Calicut he erected a church, a hospital, nurseries and orphanages. Recalled (1880) to his province, he was entrusted (1893) with the office of promoter of the Malabar missions, and instituted in Belgium the "Pium Opus," by means of which he supplied the bishops and missionaries of India with large sums, destined for the erection of institutes, schools and churches. He published several works of missionary history and of asceticism.
