ALESSANDRO of Saint Francis. — Ascetic writer of the Discalced Carmelites, of the noble Ubaldini family (whose name was Lelio), born in Rome on 18 Oct. 1588, died there on 16 Apr. 1630. He entered the Carmelite Order on 1 Apr. 1605. In 1614 he was sent to France as master of novices, and was then elected definitor of the nascent French province (1617–19). Returning to Rome, he served as prior of the Convent of the Scala (1619–22), provincial of the Roman province (1622–25), and definitor general (1629).
He left the following works: *Manuale pauperum ad thesaurus standos thesaurus in coelo*, Lyon 1630, Turin 1872 (Italian translation: Parma 1649, Siena 1879); *De praesentia Dei*; *Schola virtutum*; *Horologium animae*; *Soliloquia animae fidelis*; *Epistolae*. All these works were published together in Lyon (1633) and Rome (1670–71, in 2 vols.). He also translated the *Works of St. John of the Cross* into Italian (Rome 1637).
