ALESSANDRO di SAN FRANCESCO. - Discalced Carmelite ascetical writer, of the noble Ubaldini family (named Lelio), born in Rome on 18 Oct. 1588, died there on 16 Apr. 1630. He entered the Carmelite Order on 1 Apr. 1605. In 1614 he was sent to France as master of novices, then elected definitor of the nascent province of France (1617-19). Having returned to Rome, he was prior of the convent of the Scala (1619-22), provincial of the Roman province (1622-25), and general definitor (1629).
He left the following works: Manuale pauperum ad thesaurizandos thesauros in coelo, Lyons 1630, Turin 1872 (Italian translation: Parma 1649, Siena 1879); De praesentia Dei; Schola virtutum; Horologium animae; Solliopnia animae fidelis; Epistolae. All these works were published together in Lyons (1633) and Rome (1670-71, in 2 vols.). He also translated the Opere di s. Giovanni della Croce into Italian (Rome 1637).
