ALMEIDA PEREIRA DE ANDRADE, FORTUNATO de. – Portuguese scholar and historian, born in 1869, died in 1933, member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences, whose disciplined and conscientious activity produced a considerable number of solid studies in history, geography, and sociology.
Among the many, we cite: O Infante de Sagres; A questão social; Historia das Instituições em Portugal; Portugal e as colonias portuguesas; A ordem de San Bento; Jesuítas e congregações religiosas; Subsídios para a restauração da toponímia em língua portuguesa; A antiga escola de philosophia conimbricense; Princípios scientificos de geografia física e política, etc. Yet his name is linked above all to the Historia de Portugal and, even more, to the seven-volume Historia da Igreja em Portugal (Coimbra 1910–23), a vast collection of material relating to the history of the clergy and ecclesiastical organization in Portugal.
