Altercatio Heracliani redirects here.

HERACLIANUS. - A citizen of Sirmium in the 4th century, a faithful Catholic and opponent of the Arianism represented by his bishop Germinius.

There survives an Alteratio Heracliani laici cum Germinio episcopio Sirmienti de fide synodi Nicuenae et Ariminensis Arianorum. It is a stenographic account by an ear-witness, who attends the interrogation of this layman tried by his bishop together with two other companions for their faith on 7 Jan. 366. Unable to overcome them with words, Germinius resorts to brute force and extorts from him a written confession of Arian faith. The account is composed in a fresh rustic Latin, extremely interesting in its theological and cultural particulars and for its dependence on African writers. It was published for the first time by C. P. Caspari, Kirchenhistorische Anekdota, I, Christiania 1883, pp. 131-47.
