AMANDUS OF ZIERIKZEE. - Dutch Franciscan exegete, b. around 1450 on the island of Walcheren, d. 8 June 1534 at Louvain.
A doctor of theology, he was renowned as a Greek and Hebrew scholar. Provincial of Cologne (1503), he resigned after three years to leave the office to the scheming Wessel Gasbrink, and lived in retirement in the student house of his Order at Louvain, teaching theology and Sacred Scripture there. He left, in manuscript, commentaries on Gen., Job, Eccl., Ps. 118, on the 70 Weeks of Daniel, and a De XV stationibus (of Israel in the desert). Franciscus Titelmans published his Chronica compendiosissima ab exordio mundi usque ad a. 1534 (Antwerp 1534, 1537), rich in rare documents.
