Amici, Giovanni Battista

AMICI, GIOVANNI BATTISTA. - Italian physicist, astronomer, mathematician and biologist, b. in 1786, d. in 1863. Brilliant for the introduction of the immersion objective (1840), later perfected by Abbe, and for the discovery of the germination of the pollen grain on the stigma, of the path of the pollen tube into the interior of the ovule, fertilization and the origin of the embryo of phanerogams (1822-39).

A. was a complete Catholic.
