FRIENDS OF SACRED ART. – The papal dispositions for sacred art, issued in 1925, provide for the establishment in every diocese, under the Local Commission for Sacred Art, of a “Society of the Friends of Sacred Art,” which, spreading from the diocesan seat to outlying parishes or churches through parish groups, is to promote everything that tends to the embellishment, decorum, and cleanliness of churches. This institution is of a strictly hierarchical character and in many cases is presided over by the bishop himself or by the president of the diocesan commission (see ISTITUTI DI STUDI PER L'ARTE SACRA).
