WATERCOLOR. - A method of painting on a white or very light ground by means of transparent colours, prepared with gum arabic and glycerine and dissolved in water, so that, without resorting to white lead, the lights are given by the ground left uncovered or lightly veiled. Some bring out the purest whites by using a scraper. It is advisable to keep watercolours, since they are almost always of small dimensions, under glass and not to leave them exposed to the sun's rays (see also GUAZZO).

This technique, which the Chinese used on silk as early as the 3rd century B.C., has also been practised among us, especially for sketches and studies or for colouring prints and drawings. Beginning in the 18th century, in Holland, England, Italy and elsewhere, it was used with subtle refinements by specialized artists who formed societies and organized exhibitions.
It has limited application in the field of sacred art, to which it can give devotional prints, ex-votos, and small pictures. Overbeck painted the stations of a Via Crucis in watercolour. - See Pl. XXI.
