Guazzo

GUAZZO. - Gouache painting is that which uses a gum as the gluten, or vehicle, of the color instead of animal glues, wax and egg white employed in tempera.

The procedure is very ancient: it was much used in Hellenistic painting, at Pompeii, in the catacombs. Transparent and quick, the gouache brushstroke allows easy and evocative effects and also, owing to the fact that it is of a very thin body, almost a glaze, it makes it possible to realize the pictorial idea with immediacy. It is used today mostly in scene painting, which usefully exploits its rapidity of technique and its synthetic pictorial vision.
