AGRICOLA, FILIPPO. – Painter, born in Rome on 12 Apr. 1795 (according to some in Urbino in 1776) to Luigi (also a painter and author, among other works, of a *St Elizabeth* for S. Antonino dei Portoghesi), died there on 2 Dec. 1857. He was a pupil of Landi and Camuccini at the Accademia di S. Luca, of which
he became president in 1854. In 1812 he won the Napoleonic competition with a *Marius amid the Ruins of Carthage*, and though rigorously Neoclassical, he indulged the Romantic taste with his well-known diptychs of the most celebrated lovers (*Dante and Beatrice, Petrarch and Laura*, etc.), celebrated by Monti in one of his poems. Monti also commemorated in a sonnet the fine portrait, with an almost cinquecento composition, which A. painted of his daughter Costanza Monti Perticari. While serving as director of the Vatican Mosaic Studio, he designed the cartoons that, completed by M. Consoni, were translated into mosaics for the façade of the basilica of S. Paul Outside the Walls. For the same basilica he painted an *Assumption*, counted among his best works and now preserved in the adjoining monastery.
