AGRICOLA, ALESSANDRO. - Musician, b. ca. 1446 in Flanders. From boyhood he was a singer in the chapel of the Sforza in Milan, where he remained until 1474, then in the service of the Duke of Mantua and from 1491 as the latter's [the duke's] singer at Brussels, at the court of Philip the Handsome of Burgundy, with whom he then went to Spain, where he remained until his death, which probably occurred at Valladolid in 1506. In his day he enjoyed great fame as a polyphonic composer, as is also shown by the fact that Ottaviano Petrucci included in his three oldest collections (1501-1503) 31 songs and mettetti and published in 1504 a book of masses.
