FRIENDS OF MISSIONS. - Association founded on 12 Dec. 1923, on the initiative of Georges Goyau and the Jesuit Father Piolet, for the purpose of making the missions, especially the French ones, known to the general public and, on occasion, defending and recommending them; in short, to create around them an atmosphere of sympathy and interest, promoting the study of their history and their methods by means of a large specialized library, communications to the press, conferences and various publications, among them a large quarterly review, a series of memoirs and historical documents, etc. It is to the A. d. M. that the creation of a chair of mission history at the Catholic Institute of Paris is due, whose first holder was in fact the academician G. Goyau, who was succeeded by Paul Lesourd. The review (Revue d'Histoire des Missions), which was published in Paris from June 1924, ceased with the Second World War.
