ANDERTON, JAMES. – English Catholic apologist, layman, b. at Lostock Hall (Lancashire) in 1557 and d. in 1618.
He wrote various works directed especially to Protestants, among them: The Liturgie of the Mass; St. Augustin's Religion Collected from his own Writings and Luther's Life from Protestants. He is sometimes also credited with the work The Protestants Apologie, published in 1604 under the pseudonym of John Brerely. Generally, however, it is considered to have been written by his priestly nephew Lorenzo Anderton.
