ANDERTON, JAMES. - English Catholic apologist, layman, b. at Lostock Hall (Lancashire) in 1557, d. in 1618.
He wrote various works directed especially to Protestants, among which: *The Liturgie of the Mass*; *St. Augustin's Religion Collected from his own Writings*; and *Luther's Life from Protestants*. He is sometimes also credited with the work *The Protestants Apologie*, published in 1604 under the pseudonym John Breely. Generally, however, it is considered to have been written by his nephew, the priest Lorenzo Anderton.
