ANDERSSON, LARS. - Initiator of Protestantism in Sweden, known in Latin as Laurentius Andreae, b. ca. 1482, d. at Strengnäs on 14 April 1552.
He studied at Skara, Uppsala, Rostock and Leipzig; he went to Rome three times. A Catholic priest, he became archdeacon of Strengnäs in 1520. Returning from a journey to Rome, at Wittenberg he embraced Luther's ideas and actively spread them from 1520 onward through Olaf Peterson (Olaus Petri, 1497-1552). From 1523 to 1531 secretary and chancellor of King Gustav I Vasa (1523-60), he soon won him over to the "reformation," urged him to confiscate the property of the Church and to extend the heresy to all of Sweden, which was officially imposed by the diet of Westersas (1527) and organized in the "council" of Örebro (1529) directed by A. But he later became an opponent of the king, and on 2 Jan. 1540 he was, together with O. Peterson, condemned to death for high treason; he saved himself by paying an enormous fine and retired in great poverty to Strengnäs.
A. was the promoter of the Swedish version of the New Testament (Stockholm 1526), a work mainly by O. Peterson. The version of the whole Bible (Uppsala 1541), called the "Gustav" Bible, drawing on the Vulgate and on Luther's version of 1534, is due to the "archbishop" of Uppsala Laurentius Petri (1499-1573), aided by his brother Olaus and by A.
