ANDREW THE PRESBYTER. - Byzantine writer, author of "catena" commentaries on Prov. and Is., perhaps also on Act. and the Catholic Epistles. The place (Constantinople?) and the time in which he lived are unknown. He is later than the 7th century, since he cites St. Maximus the Confessor (d. 662), but not later than the 10th century, if the "catena" on Act. and the Catholic Epistles is his. The codices containing the "catena" commentaries of A. are: Vindob. theol. 26 (of 1236, on Prov. and Is.); Monac. 32 (on Prov.); Vatic. Ottobon. gr. 7 (on Is., in 3 books); Monac. 38 (on Is., a single book). The Cod. Coislin. 25 (10th century), reproduced by the Cod. Oxon. Collegii novi 58 (13th century) which J. A. Cramer followed in his edition, contains the "catena" commentaries on Act. and the Catholic Epistles, which Staab however denies to A. R. Devreesse regards A. as a mere copyist.
